Castelbuono

A village in the Madonie Park (UNESCO Geopark), overlooked by the Ventimiglia Castle, built in 1317. Editors' suggestion: combine it with a day in Cefalù, especially in autumn and winter, when the sea is not an option.

Fits a 3-day trip

To combine with Cefalù; best in autumn and winter, when the sea is not an option.

What to see

  • Castello dei Ventimiglia e Museo Civico: Built in 1317 by Count Francesco I Ventimiglia on a 12th-century tower; houses the Civic Museum and the Palatine Chapel with Serpotta stuccoes (1684-87). Hours according to the Museum's website: November to March every day 9:30-16:45 (continuous); April to October every day 9:30-13:00 and 15:00-18:30. The site gives no ticket prices and warns that hours may change.
  • Centro storico: Madrice Vecchia (14th c.), San Francesco church with the Ventimiglia Mausoleum, Venere Ciprea fountain.
  • Museo Naturalistico Francesco Minà Palumbo: Piazza San Francesco 3. According to the Museum's website: Tuesday-Sunday 9:30-13:00 and 15:30-19:00, closed Mondays; full €5, reduced €2.50, free under 7. The page mentions a reopening on 19 July 2025: confirm by phone (0921 677174) before you go.
  • Manna: A product obtained from ash trees, typical of Castelbuono.
  • Zipline a San Mauro Castelverde: In the Madonie Park, Zipline Sicilia offers a ride on a steel cable about 1,600 m long with a drop of about 260 m, at speeds up to about 130 km/h. Season given: March to December. Requirements: age 12+ and over 35 kg; max 120 kg alone and 145 kg for two. Prices and hours are not published on the regional portal: ask the operator (info@ziplinesicilia.it, +39 333 129 3487) and book. San Mauro Castelverde is another Madonie town, not Castelbuono: you need a car.

Getting there

Better by car

For this place a car is the better choice (editors' note). The Park website and Visit Sicily point to a bus service for the Madonie (and Castelbuono), but the available timetables date from 2022 or are not shown: check current ones with AST (astspa.it) and the Park.

By car

Distances and times from Palermo and from Cefalù are not verified on an official source; a car is the most practical way, also to combine Cefalù and Castelbuono in the same day.

When to go

The Civic Museum is open every day, including in winter, when the sea is not an option. Events: Infiorata in spring, Feast of Sant'Anna in July, Ypsigrock in August.

Tips

  • In autumn and winter, combine Cefalù and Castelbuono in the same day (editors' suggestion).
  • Museum hours change with the season: check the official websites before you go.
  • Contact the Park authority (+39 0921 684011) for bus times, visitor centres and trails.

Where a detail could not be found on an official source we do not include it: always check times and fares on the official site before you go.
